Lead Sampling in Drinking Water

The Ontario Regulation 170/03 - Drinking Water Systems, legislates that all municipalities, twice per year, obtain samples from the distribution system and test for lead content. The City of Vaughan is fully compliant with this requirement, and the results are posted here as part of the annual water quality report.

Does the City of Vaughan test for lead in homes?

No, this is no longer required. Before 2011, the City was mandated to collect 100 samples from points in plumbing that serve private residences, along with sampling in the distribution system. These samples showed that lead was not at significant levels anywhere in the City. Therefore, regulatory relief was granted by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), which eliminated the requirement for sampling in private residences. However, if residents call with any concerns, we test the water in their home free of charge.

How does the City handle discoveries of lead pipes on City property?

Through proactive asset management procedures, the City has removed the last of its lead water services in the 1990s, as such, there are no longer city-owned lead services.

I received a letter from my child’s school regarding high lead levels in water samples at that location, where can I find out more information on this?

The City of Vaughan continues to meet and exceed sampling and testing results for drinking water within the distribution system. Schools and daycare facilities are subject to different legislative requirements regarding lead sampling, Ontario Regulation 243/07 - Schools, Private School and Child Care Centres.
