Vaughan’s first event welcomes spring cleaners and treasure hunters
One person’s reusables is another person’s riches. The City of Vaughan is hosting a series of curbside giveaway events, which offer residents the chance to part with unwanted, gently used items and treasure hunters the opportunity to discover a few gems. The curbside giveaway weekends are scheduled for:
- Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28
- Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25
- Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30
- Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27
- Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1
- Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29
Items can be placed at the curb on Saturday starting at 7 a.m. Unclaimed items must be removed by 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Books, furniture, small appliances, sports equipment, toys, tools and kitchen gadgets are some examples of acceptable reusable items that can be put out. Pieces placed curbside must have a “FREE – Curbside Giveaway” sign on them and treasure hunters should only take things marked as such. Residents should ensure bicycles and other personal items are put away during this time so they aren’t taken by mistake. Products listed on Health Canada’s consumer product safety website (such as baby walkers or car seats) are not acceptable items.
Curbside giveaways help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by giving useful items a new life. They also promote reuse, contribute to a more sustainable city and build a stronger community. Residents are encouraged to participate by walking or cycling around the neighbourhood.
Participants can use #curbsideVAUGHAN on Twitter or join our Facebook event to either post pictures of items they’ve put out or search for items of interest. Unclaimed reusable items can be donated to a local charity. If the item is considered to be garbage, it should be disposed of on the regular waste collection day. Curbside limits and set-out rules apply. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/waste.
